Course
Provisioning in Moodle Presenter: Beining |
·
Baseline processes have been established in
using Moodle. Now it is time to make
course provisioning a more LEAN process.
·
What is provisioning? When a course from datatel is “pushed” over
to Moodle. ·
Course provisioning is a very time
consuming process. ·
The provisioning issue was presented to the
DL Committee. Their recommendation is
that all face-to-face classes will be provisioned. ·
Benefits of provisioning all face-to-face
classes: less time consuming; much
faster process for staff; anticipating faculty need and eliminates shell
requests from faculty; provides a method of emergency communication (ex.
class cancellation). ·
DL Committee concerns of provisioning all
face-to-face classes: Storage space –
shells do not take up much storage space; Confusing to students? Unless the
class is actually made available by the faculty, students can not see
it. If faculty is not interested in
using the shell, they can just ignore it – there is no requirement that they
must use it for their face-to-face class. ·
Provisioning of all face-to-face classes
would take place week 10 of the term and faculty will be notified when
provisioning is completed. Faculty can
transfer their own content (there are instructions to follow) or they can ask
the DL office to do so for them. ·
Moodle does have the capability for
blogging but before moving your current blog over, look to see if the Moodle
blog serves the same purpose. ·
Moodle can be used to alert students via
email of class cancellation. |
Curriculum
Committee Updates Presenter: Parker |
·
Curriculum Committee met over the summer to
look at accreditation requirements and what was needed to certify that
courses were meeting gen ed outcomes and criteria. ·
The Committee clarified the gen ed mapping
language and modified the outcome document and course outline. ·
The annual update of outlines will be
moving to a 3-year cycle. This will be
implemented fairly soon. ·
The roles between the Curriculum Committee
and the Curriculum Office are being clarified. Course outlines will “live” in the
Curriculum Office, not in the departments.
The future goal is to put the outlines on the web so they are
available to both internal and external people. ·
A style guide in also in the works to help
departments better prepare for course review and gen ed certification. This
will be coming out soon. ·
Supporting documents for gen ed
certification process are on the committee’s website. These documents will show guidelines to
make the course approval process run smoothly. ·
The deadline for new courses to be approved
and be in the printed catalog is November 29, 2010. For courses submitted for approval after
the deadline, there will be a list on
the web of those courses and a reference in the catalog of where to find that
list. The online list will include
everything in the catalog. ·
Experimental courses do not need to go to
Curriculum Committee. ·
Non ged ed courses should follow the best
practices for writing outcomes and should follow the style guide. ·
If anyone needs help with the new
Curriculum Committee outline guidelines, Curriculum Committee members are
here to help. Please feel free to
contact them. |
